I just finished showing the original Evangelion series to a bunch of friends. Each time I re-watch the series, I draw something new from it, a new interpretation for me to play with and realize. I hadn’t seen all the series for at least a year or two, so I did get to enjoy just how powerful so many of the scenes were again.
Still, what I did realize was how little impact Rei left.
The one thing Rebuild did far better than the original anime was make Rei a character with a strong presence without pushing every other major character aside, as in Sadamoto’s manga. In the original, however, Rei doesn’t show much development at all until Episode 23, and, by then, even Maya and Hyuuga leave more of an impression on me (especially poor Hyuuga and his crush on Misato, considering how she’s still in love with Kaji…).
I mean, it’s not like I dislike Rei’s character. That would imply that she left enough of an impression on me to dislike. It’s just that, between all the other characters’ psychological breakdowns, Rei comes across as a plot device…which she is. She exists purely as a means to activate Instrumentality, and her only development comes in when she flips Gendo off and gives Shinji the keys to the world…and we all know how THAT turned out. >_<
